NEW YORK STATE NOT-FOR-PROFIT OR GOVERNMENTAL ORGANIZATION WITH DEMONSTRATED CAPABILITY TO CONDUCT EXTERNALLY-FUNDED RESEARCH
Empire State Institutional Training Programs in Stem Cell Research for Predoctoral and Postdoctoral Fellows
The New York State Department of Health invites eligible applicants to submit applications for institutionally-based training programs (NIH T32-like awards) that will enable New York State to attract and retain the most promising and exceptionally talented predoctoral and postdoctoral fellows. The intent of the Empire State Stem Cell Training Program is to support the continued training of researchers with exceptional potential for making significant contributions to the fields of stem cell-related research.
The supported training program and related research efforts may focus on any aspect(s) of stem cell biology (basic, applied, translational, pre-clinical or clinical research) that will lead to a better understanding of the unique properties of stem cells and the development of applications for the diagnosis, prevention or treatment of disease.
NYSTEM, a program of the New York State Department of Health, whose purpose is to administer stem cell research funding based on recommendations and advice from the Empire State Stem Cell Board, has designated approximately $7.5 million for this RFA and will be making approximately four awards. The number of awards made will be contingent upon the quality of applications submitted and the availability of funds. This funding is for a period up to five years. No award may exceed $350,000 in annual direct costs. Additionally, funds will be available to support Facilities and Administrative costs of up to eight percent of the modified total direct costs.
ELIGIBLE RECIPIENTS: The applicant must be a New York State not-for-profit or governmental organization with demonstrated capability to conduct externally-funded research. In addition, applicants for predoctoral training must be degree-granting institutions. Organizations awarded funds will be expected to monitor funds, maintain individual accounts and fulfill other fiscal management criteria. Subcontracting and collaborating organizations may include public, not-for-profit and for-profit entities. Such entities may be located outside of New York State.
The eligible principal investigator (PI)/program director (PD) is employed by the applicant institution and possesses the scientific background, leadership and administrative capabilities required to coordinate, supervise and direct the proposed research training program described in the Workplan. An individual may serve as a PI/PD on only one application in response to this RFA and only one application will be accepted from any single institution. In the event that more than one application is received from a PI/PD or institution, all applications from that PI/PD or institution will be disqualified.
APPLICATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED THROUGH: June 30, 2010. The anticipated contract start date is July 1, 2011.
This RFA, including application forms, has been posted on the Department of Health’s public website at http://www.nyhealth.gov/funding/
