Sec. 46.12. Exterior reflective markings

  • (a) Every school bus manufactured for use in this State on or after April 1, 2000, and every school bus used in this State on or after September 1, 2002, shall be equipped with exterior reflective markings as follows:
    (1) the rear of the school bus shall be marked with reflective material to outline the perimeter of the back of the school bus and of the rear emergency exit;
    (2)
    (i) the school bus shall have a horizontal application of strips of reflective material, not less than 1¾ inches wide, above the rear windows, and above the rear bumper from the edges of the rear emergency exit door to both corners of the school bus with vertical strips of reflective material at each corner connected to the horizontal strips;
    (ii) the rear emergency exit shall be outlined around its outside perimeter with strips of reflective material, not less than 2.5 centimeters in width;
    (3) the school bus shall have a horizontal application of strips of reflective material, not less than 1¾ inches wide, the entire length of the sides of the school bus body and located equidistant between the floorline and the beltline of the bus; and
    (4) reflective material may be applied to the front and rear bumpers of school buses. If it is applied, such reflective material shall be between 1¾ and 2¼ inches wide applied thereto at a 45 degree angle to the center line of the road surface. There shall be a two-inch wide nonreflective strip between each strip of reflective material.
    (b) Reflective material.
    Reflective material shall mean reflective material as set forth in 17 NYCRR 720.4(n)(2).
    (c) School bus, as used in this section, is defined in section 142 of the Vehicle and Traffic Law, but shall only apply to buses used to transport 10 or more passengers.
